What is my IP address and how do I find it?

An IP address is the network address through which your connection can be reached on the internet. The top of this page shows the address observed in your request. Devices using the same home router may share a public IPv4 address while having different local network addresses.

The difference between IPv4 and IPv6

IPv4 uses a dotted address such as 8.8.8.8. IPv6 has a larger address space and uses groups separated by colons. The label above shows the type used for this connection; availability of the other type requires a separate test.

What does an IP lookup show?

An ASN identifies the autonomous network associated with an IP. The operator or organization is the network’s registered owner, which does not identify the person using the address. You can look up the IP’s network range and current approximate location.

How accurate is IP location?

Location is an estimate from network databases. A VPN, mobile network, data center or routed address may appear in a different city or country. City information is not available for every IP; this is not a GPS measurement.
