What is TLS?

Encrypts the connection between a client and server and verifies the server identity through a certificate.

In an HTTPS connection, TLS protects traffic between the client and server and supports verification of the server certificate. Read hostname matching, validity dates and the trust chain together when reviewing a certificate. Follow your provider instructions to include the necessary intermediate certificates when configuring the server.

Example

A certificate presented for www.example.com should cover that name, be within its validity dates and connect to a trusted certificate chain.

Common issue

A certificate with valid dates may belong to another hostname or be presented with an incomplete chain. Checking only its expiry date does not prove the connection can be verified.
