What is a CNAME Record?

A DNS alias that points a domain name to another domain name.

Use a CNAME when a subdomain should follow another hostname supplied by a service. Enter a domain name as the value, rather than an IP address or an address beginning with https://. After querying the record, check that the target name also resolves to the required address records.

Example

www.example.com. 3600 IN CNAME app.example.net. — Address resolution for www follows the name app.example.net.

Common issue

A CNAME is not an HTTP redirect; it does not change the browser address or URL path. Publishing a CNAME alongside other ordinary data records, such as A, at the same name creates a conflict.
