What is a PTR Record?

The record used for reverse DNS queries from an IP address to a domain name.

A reverse DNS query looks up a server name associated with an IP address. Select PTR in the DNS tool and enter the public IP address you want to check. Changes to PTR records are usually handled by the hosting or connectivity provider that manages the IP block, through its panel or support team.

Example

For the documentation address 192.0.2.10, the IPv4 reverse lookup name is 10.2.0.192.in-addr.arpa. This example address is not a live query target.

Common issue

Creating an A record does not create a PTR record for the same IP address. A missing PTR does not by itself show that a website is unavailable, although reverse DNS can matter for mail servers.
